Race to the MVP: Week 1

Race to the MVP - Overall Player Rankings
1. Sue Bird, Seattle Storm (1-0)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
13.0 4.0 10.0 3.0 0.0 0.417 0.000 0.750 +18.00

A double-double in game one will get you some love here in the Race to the MVP rankings. Not only did Sue finish with 13 and 10 on Saturday, but she also delivered bounce passes with Bird-like accuracy that fans have all come to expect, love and/or fear (depending on fandom).

2. Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury (0-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
31.0 1.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 0.550 0.800 1.000 +22.00
Last ranking: N/A
The league's general managers voted Diana Taurasi as the player most likely to win the MVP award this season and so far in just one game she looks to be on the right path. Diana scored 31 of Phoenix’s 71 points in Saturday’s loss to the Storm. With just one game to pull from you have to wonder where she is now headed for the remainder of the season. I’m looking up.

3. Lauren Jackson, Seattle Storm (1-0)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.0 7.0 1.0 1.0 0.0 .444 1.000 1.000 +16.00
Last ranking: N/A
The reigning MVP fittingly makes her way onto the opening week’s Race to the MVP rankings after tossing up 15 points and snagging seven rebounds in the Storm’s win over Phoenix. Six of her total points came at the free-throw line, further illustrating the fact that LJ will get her points any way necessary.

4. Candace Parker, Los Angeles Sparks (1-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.0 8.5 3.0 1.0 1.5 0.462 0.250 0.500 +18.00
Last ranking: N/A
Candace is back in action and looking just fine after two games. Her 19 points and 10 rebounds Friday against the Lynx was evidence to the fact. Sunday’s 11-7 outing was just an example of Minnesota making the right adjustments to limit Candace’s impact on the game. This Friday’s game against Phoenix should be an interesting one.

5. Cappie Pondexter, New York Liberty (1-0)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
12.0 3.0 11.0 1.0 0.0 0.333 0.000 1.000 +14.00
Last ranking: N/A
Cappie’s 5-of-15 shooting against the Dream isn’t typical, so odds are we’ll see a bigger outing over the next week or so. What Cappie couldn’t finish on her own she dished off to teammates, as she registered 11 assists on top of 12 points in her season debut. Maybe her shooting was off, but a double-double is a nice way to tip things off.

6. Rebekkah Brunson, Minnesota Lynx (1-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
10.0 13.5 2.5 0.5 0.0 0.526 0.000 0.000 +20.00
Last ranking: N/A
As ESPN’s Mechelle Voepel said in Saturday’s WNBA.com/ESPN live chat, Rebekkah Brunson is one of the most underrated players in the league. I agreed then and agree even more now. In her first weekend, Brunson registered a quiet 10-12 in Friday’s loss and 10-15 in Sunday’s win. Last season’s averages of 11.3 points and 10.3 rebounds look to be possible yet again.

7. Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever (1-0)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.0 9.0 3.0 3.0 0.0 .308 .000 1.000 +19.00
Last ranking: N/A
Tamika is a multi-faceted player who is capable of relying on different elements of her game when the going gets tough in the shooting department. That was precisely the case Saturday when she shot 4-for-13 from the field but backed it up with 7-for-7 from the free-throw line, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals.

8. Maya Moore, Minnesota Lynx (1-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
18.5 3.5 2.5 1.0 0.5 0.433 0.353 0.833 +16.00
Last ranking: N/A
Welcome to the rankings rook. But are we all that surprised? Maya debuted with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists Friday before posting up 16 points and three boards on Sunday. Much like Tina Charles’ 2010 season, you can expect to see her circling around these rankings a bit if she looks to keep that up.

9. Sophia Young, San Antonio Silver Stars (1-0)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
20.0 4.0 4.0 2.0 1.0 0.643 0.000 0.667 +21.00
Last ranking: N/A
Sophia and Becky Hammon (who just barely missed out on cracking the Top 10) will continue to be the offensive forces in the Silver Stars’ system. Sophia’s 20 points, four assists and four rebounds is typical of her across-the-board work ethic and it’s exactly what San Antonio is going to need this season.

10. Elizabeth Cambage, Tulsa Shock (0-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
18.0 10.0 2.0 2.0 1.0 0.300 0.000 0.857 +18.00
Last ranking: N/A
It was a tough go for the Shock in that first game against San Antonio, but Liz showed signs of what is to come in Tulsa with 18 points and 10 boards in her rookie debut. Now if only the pieces around her get clicking soon enough, Tulsa can work on improving on that 6-28 record in 2010.

Race to the MVP - Overall Player Rankings

1. Rebekkah Brunson, Minnesota Lynx (3-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
14.8 14.0 1.8 0.8 0.2 0.641 0.000 0.692 +25.00
Last ranking: 6
There’s no better candidate for the No. 1 spot than Minnesota’s Rebekkah Brunson. The Lynx’s 3-1 start is proof that there's more than one weapon to work with on this roster, but Brunson’s four straight double-doubles to open up the season remains a solid piece that teams will have to contend with if they’re looking to get one up on Minny.

2. Sylvia Fowles, Chicago Sky (2-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
18.7 7.7 0.7 1.3 2.0 .639 0.000 .625 +21.67
Last ranking: N/A
In Chicago’s first game against Indiana on June 4, Sylvia Fowles took a total of five shots, hit four of them and finished with just 10 points. The Sky lost 65-57. Over the next two games she shot the ball 19 times against the Sun and 12 times against the Mystics, tallying 23 points in each win. The point here? Give Fowles the ball and good things will happen.

3. Katie Douglas, Indiana Fever (2-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
21.0 5.0 3.0 0.7 0.3 .545 .526 .625 +20.33
Last ranking: N/A
At 21 points per game, Katie Douglas enters the second week of the season as the league’s leading scorer. Her 27 points against the Liberty Thursday night provided the Fever with an opportunity to pull out the win in the final seconds, but Pondexter delivered the dagger with less than 10 to go. She followed up in the next day’s rematch against New York with 17 points, four assists and four rebounds. When Katie’s on, she’s on.

4. Cappie Pondexter, New York Liberty (2-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.3 2.3 6.0 1.0 0.3 .422 .308 1.000 +13.00
Last ranking: 5
Cappie Pondexter's clutch play remains a big factor in her status for MVP considerations. Look no further than her game-winning shot with eight ticks left on the clock Friday night against the Fever. New York’s offense ranks second overall in points per game (85) and Pondexter will remain a big part of that in the games going forward.

5. Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever (2-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.7 5.7 3.3 2.7 0.3 .486 .286 1.000 +18.33
Last ranking: 7
If there’s an open shot, Tamika Catchings will take it. If there’s a loose ball, she’s going to steal it. If a teammate is open for the shot, she will find her. And if an opposing player thinks they have a clear look at the rim, she better think twice because Catchings will fly out of nowhere to deny it. Nineteen points on 7-of-10 shooting got the job done Saturday against the Liberty, and her 6-for-12 on Friday almost did it as well.

6. Sue Bird, Seattle Storm (1-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
18.5 2.0 6.5 1.5 0.5 .441 .364 .750 +16.00
Last ranking: 1
Despite a rough start that allowed Minnesota to jump out to an early 22-0 lead, the Storm battled back in an attempt to pull out a ‘W’ at the end in Thursday's game at KeyArena. Sue Bird did her part with 24 points on 10-for-22 shooting, but she might have finished slightly higher in this week’s rankings if Seattle managed to pull out the win. It was an ugly game that Seattle will look to bury with a few more wins on the schedule.

7. Candace Parker, Los Angeles Sparks (2-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
17.3 8.3 3.7 1.3 1.7 .465 .200 .647 +21.00
Last ranking: 4
Candace Parker posted a season-high 22 points against the Mercury Friday night, hitting eight of her 17 shots from the field and adding another six points from the line. This time last year Parker was pulling down double-doubles at an alarming rate, but with her game extending beyond the rim a bit more we may see more of an increase in points rather than boards. Not exactly a bad trade-off.

8. Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury (0-2)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
20.0 2.0 2.0 1.0 0.5 .448 .462 1.000 +13.00
Last ranking: 2
The 0-2 Phoenix Mercury will hope to turn things around later this week when they host the San Antonio Silver Stars Friday night. Diana Taurasi can’t do it on her own, but when Phoenix turns things around (and they will in all likelihood turn things around), Taurasi will remain a huge factor on the road ahead.

9. Lauren Jackson, Seattle Storm (1-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
12.0 7.0 0.5 1.0 0.0 .381 .500 1.000 +11.00
Last ranking: 3
The final score of Thursday’s loss to the Minnesota Lynx made the game look much closer than it actually was. Lauren Jackson wasn’t the only Storm player to struggle in the game but her nine points and seven rebounds isn’t going to have last year's MVP winner knocking on the door for a repeat just yet. With only two games scratched off the calendar, there’s still plenty of time for her to gain some ground.

10. Maya Moore, Minnesota Lynx (3-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
14.5 5.0 2.3 1.2 0.5 .440 .318 .875 +15.00
Last ranking: 8
Maya Moore didn't have the hottest game of her young career against Tulsa last Tuesday night, but she bounced back from that 2-for-10 shooting performance to drop 14 points on Seattle two nights later. Her accuracy was on that night as she hit 7-of-10 shots and also hauled in six rebounds. At times it's easy to forget that she's only four games into her rookie year.

Race to the MVP: Week 3

By Frank Della Femina, WNBA.com

Race to the MVP - Overall Player Rankings
1. Rebekkah Brunson, Minnesota Lynx (5-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
14.5 13.3 1.3 1.0 0.2 0.614 0.000 0.739 +23.83
Last ranking: 1
With six double-doubles in six straight games, there's no denying that Rebekkah Brunson is off to an incredible start. That total ties a league record for most double-doubles to start a season, making Friday's game against Seattle a must-watch in my book. If the MVP award was given out today, Brunson would win it. Hands down.

2. Sylvia Fowles, Chicago Sky (3-2)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
21.2 8.8 0.6 1.6 1.6 .594 0.000 .750 +24.00
Last ranking: 2
Four straight games with 20 points or more has allowed Sylvia Fowles to make a strong push to the top of the Race to the MVP rankings. If Chicago can keep picking up some wins then I don't anticipate Big Syl taking a significant drop anytime soon. Those wins will come if Syl continues to stay hot.

3. Tina Charles, Connecticut Sun (4-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
20.4 8.0 0.8 0.6 1.4 .573 0.000 .762 +21.20
Last ranking: N/A
Connecticut's winning and Tina Charles is thriving. Not only has the second-year center pick up two straight double-doubles, but her 31 points against the Sky on Thursday marks a new career high. And she did it against one of the bigger post teams in the league. If there's a lesson learned here it's that Tina takes losing personal.

4. Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever (3-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
13.3 8.8 3.3 2.0 0.3 .425 .250 .933 +17.83
Last ranking: 5
Tamika Catchings couldn't really get her offense going in last Tuesday's game against Tulsa and Friday's game against the Storm. The Fever escaped her shooting woes with a win over Tulsa before falling to the Storm in what was just a poor team performance overall. Indy hit its stride Sunday against the Mercury but couldn't get it done in regulation before losing in overtime. Catchings hauled in a combined 29 rebounds over both of those games, including a 17-point, 15-board performance against Phoenix for her first double-double of the season. Plenty more to come.

5. Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury (1-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
23.0 3.5 2.3 1.0 0.5 .439 .393 .821 +16.25
Last ranking: 8
How serious is Diana Taurasi's approach to each game? Well, considering she compared the Mercury's fourth game of the season to Game 5 of the WNBA Finals, I'd say she's not joking around one bit. Phoenix's first win didn't come easy, but Taurasi took the reigns in overtime to finish with 32 points in a 93-89 win over the Fever.

6. Cappie Pondexter, New York Liberty (2-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
14.6 3.6 4.0 1.2 0.4 .356 .190 .850 +10.80
Last ranking: 4
Shots just aren't falling for Cappie right now, especially from downtown. Despite her struggles from the field though she is still finding ways to get her points. In Friday's loss to the Sky, Cappie shot 4-for-16 from the field (and 0-for-5 from 3-point land) but managed to finish with 20 points after knocking down 12 of 14 free-throw attempts.

7. Candace Parker, Los Angeles Sparks (3-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.5 8.0 3.5 1.0 1.2 .490 .167 .647 +19.50
Last ranking: 7
Candace Parker played a season-low 26 minutes and was limited to only eight touches in Sunday's win over Seattle. Not that it mattered much though as she still hit five of those shots to close out with 10 points and seven boards. Interestingly enough, Parker failed to reach the charity stripe for the first time this season in the win.

8. Katie Douglas, Indiana Fever (3-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
16.5 4.8 2.0 0.8 0.3 .536 .515 .615 +16.67
Last ranking: 3
In last week's rankings I said, "When Katie’s on, she’s on." That still holds true this time around, although Douglas' chances were limited a bit over the last two games. She shot the ball only seven times on Friday against the Storm and finished the game with 11 points. An injured back caused her to miss all but eight minutes of Sunday's game against Phoenix, so I find it hard to hold her low total of three points on 1-of-5 shooting against her. Let's see how she bounces back on Tuesday.

9. Sue Bird, Seattle Storm (2-2)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
16.0 2.5 5.0 1.5 0.2 .441 .333 .833 +14.50
Last ranking: 6
With Lauren Jackson struggling down the middle it looks as if all eyes will be on Sue Bird to fill the void. So far she's scored in double-figures in every game and is shooting the ball with Bird-like accuracy. Her assists have taken a bit of a dip since her 13-point, 10-assist game to open up the season, but that will increase a bit more once LJ gets back into the groove.

10. Seimone Augustus, Minnesota Lynx (5-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.3 4.2 1.3 1.3 0.5 .486 .286 .947 +15.17
Last ranking: N/A
Consistency is the name of the game for Seimone Augustus and the major factor in her jump into the Top 10 in this week's rankings. It's already been said countless times that the Minnesota Lynx have a number of weapons to consider on any given night. But the consistency of Augustus will continue to make the difference in a Minny win or a Minny loss. With 17, 25 and 19 points of the last three games, it's safe to say Augustus is heating up.

On the Outside Looking In (season averages)
11. Candice Dupree (Phoenix) 15.8 PPG, 12.5 RPG, 2.3 APG, 1.2 BPG, +24.50 EFF

Race to the MVP: Week 4

Posted Jun 28 2011 1:55PM
By Frank Della Femina, WNBA.com

http://www.wnba.com/features/player_rankings_110628.html

Race to the MVP - Overall Player Rankings
1. Sylvia Fowles
, Chicago Sky (4-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
22.4 8.9 0.8 1.8 2.1 .563 0.000 .740 +24.50
Last ranking: 2
Sylvia Fowles heads into Tuesday night's action as the league's leading scorer with 22.4 points per game. She's also well on her way to hosting another block party this season with a league-best 2.12 bpg. Add in her 56 percent shooting from the field (fifth overall) and her team's .500 record and things are looking pretty good for Big Syl.

2. Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury (4-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
20.3 4.1 2.6 0.9 1.0 0.442 .354 .868 +17.00
Last ranking: 5
Diana Taurasi has simply been on fire. She dropped 31 to open up the season, topped that with 32 two weeks later against the Fever and has scored over 20 points in the last two games. It's no wonder the Mercury is riding a four game win streak. Even when she's struggling, like last Tuesday's 2-for-13 outing against the Silver Stars, the team is still finding ways to win. And then she's quick to bounce back too. Like when she hit three of three attempts from outside the arc three nights later.

3. Tina Charles, Connecticut Sun (4-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
19.4 9.3 0.9 0.9 1.6 .528 0.000 0.786 +21.43
Last ranking: 3
Four straight double-doubles for Tina Charles bumps her up a spot in this week's rankings. Her 19.4 points per game has her ranked third overall and there's a good chance we may see her cross the 20 ppg plateau over the next two games against a Jackson-less Storm squad and a Parker-less Sparks team.

4. Rebekkah Brunson, Minnesota Lynx (5-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
12.1 12.3 1.3 1.0 0.2 .580 0.000 .680 +20.38
Last ranking: 1
Rebekkah Brunson's experience a slight drop in production over the last two games and it reflects in this week's rankings. Perhaps the one downside to Brunson's point total is her limited touches. Over the last three games she has shot the ball a combined 20 times, making nine of those attempts for a three-game total of 20 points.

5. Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever (6-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
13.9 8.6 3.8 1.8 0.2 .422 .231 .931 +18.89
Last ranking: 4
There are many areas you can highlight in Tamika Catchings' game. Outside of her tenacious defense and high-speed drives to the net, keep an eye on her rebounding. Seriously. WatchTuesday's game against the Mercury (or the archive of the game if you're reading this after the fact). If she puts up a shot outside the paint, watch how quick she is to follow it up. She literally flies in from out of nowhere to snag rebounds.

6. Cappie Pondexter, New York Liberty (4-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
17.5 3.6 5.1 1.8 0.2 .405 .364 .867 +15.88
Last ranking: 6
If you take one look at Cappie's game-by-game stats you'll notice one thing: she's found her rhythm. Over the first four games Cappie looked as if she was struggling a bit from the field, getting her points at the line and finding her teammates in lieu of taking her own shot. Now? Her 20-plus points over the last four is as good a reason as any to keep her in the field for MVP considerations.

7. Becky Hammon, San Antonio Silver Stars (6-1)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
18.0 2.9 7.1 1.6 0.4 .446 .425 .931 +19.00
Last ranking: N/A
How valuable is Becky Hammon to the Silver Stars? How about this: In Friday night's game against Los Angeles, she hit a three toward the end of regulation to tie the game at 78. Then she she scored six of San Antonio's 12 overtime points to steal the win. Top that off with her league-best 7.14 assists per game and there's no reason why she doesn't make the list this week.

8. Katie Douglas, Indiana Fever (6-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
16.3 5.3 2.1 1.4 0.4 .538 .467 .600 +17.50
Last ranking: 8
Katie Douglas dipped a bit in the rankings last week but that was a result of her injured back than anything else. In her first game back, she dropped only nine points on 4-of-10 shooting in a win over Connecticut. She bounced back the following night against Minnesota for 22 points on 9-of-14 and hauled in eight boards too. We'll keep her here at No. 8 for now and base and movement in next week's rankings on the upcoming week of play.

9. Sue Bird, Seattle Storm (4-2)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.3 2.7 5.7 1.3 0.2 .468 .379 .750 +15.17
Last ranking: 9
Sunday's win against Minnesota was the first game this season where Sue Bird didn't register double-figures in the scoring department. With Lauren Jackson out of the lineup for the next three weeks or so, I think it's safe to assume that will change going forward. But Bird doesn't have to do it by herself, as also indicated by the eight assists she tallied. If Little and Willingham want to continue working it inside then Bird will find them all day long.

Candice Dupree is averaging a double-double for a team that loves to score in transition. Rebounding is a big factor in running the fast break and so far it's working to the Mercury's advantage. She opened up the season with four dub-dubs in five games and has since gone the last two without one, but if the team keeps winning there is little issue with this.

Race to the MVP - Overall Player Rankings
1. Tina Charles, Connecticut Sun (6-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
19.8 10.9 1.1 0.8 1.4 .527 0.000 .750 +23.00
Last ranking: 3
The Connecticut Sun has posted a 4-2 record over the last six. It's no wonder, considering Tina Charles has picked up a double-double in six straight. Her 22 points and 23 boards against the Storm last Tuesday was Tina's second 20/20 game, the first coming last season against the Dream. When she scored 20 and pulled in 10 boards against the Sparks on Friday it got me thinking: "What if Tina played in the West?"

2. Sylvia Fowles, Chicago Sky (4-6)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
20.7 8.8 0.8 1.7 2.2 .566 0.000 .750 +23.40
Last ranking: 1
Friday's loss to the Phoenix Mercury was only the second game this season where Sylvia Fowles didn't finish with 20 or more points. Her 20.7 ppg remains a league-best, but the team's 4-6 record has them barely hanging on to a fourth place spot in the East. Now is not the time for Chi-town to dig itself into a hole. Wins have to keep coming if they don't want Atlanta to leapfrog them.

3. Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury (5-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
20.1 3.7 2.8 1.0 0.8 .452 .364 .870 +16.78
Last ranking: 2
Diana shot a season-low eight shots Friday against the Sky, knocking down six of them, but also hit 11 free throws to close out the night with 24 points and the win. So what's the game plan for defending Taurasi? Watching her hit six of eight is solid enough evidence to make teams defend the shot, while draining 11 of 12 from the free throw line isn't exactly a good enough reason to foul her and take away her shot.

4. Cappie Pondexter, New York Liberty (5-5)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
18.3 3.4 5.2 1.6 0.2 .409 .377 .872 +16.30
Last ranking: 6
In Friday's power rankings I said Cappie Pondexter was definitely playing MVP-caliber ball but the Liberty's record indicated she couldn't do it all by herself. On Friday against the Silver Stars Cappie dropped 19 points, her lowest total of the last six games, but also received double-figure scoring from three other teammates to beat the team with the league's best record. Something tells me she'll take that trade-off any day of the week.

5. Becky Hammon, San Antonio Silver Stars (7-2)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
17.3 2.7 6.7 1.4 0.3 .442 .418 .892 +17.78
Last ranking: 7
Becky Hammon is playing the Silver Stars into serious playoff contenders and herself into MVP considerations. She currently leads the team with 17.3 ppg and 6.7 apg, the latter of which is also tops among all players in the league.

6. Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever (7-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
13.9 8.2 4.1 2.0 0.5 .421 .222 .939 +19.50
Last ranking: 5
Tamika Catchings isn't scoring at an alarming rate, but she's never really been known for dropping 30 points or so on any given night. What's more exciting is how she spreads her game out across points, rebounding, assists and steals. Depending on how Shannon Bobbitt or Erin Phillips play at the point now that Briann January is out, fans will likely see Catchings' versatility amp'd up from now until the end of the season - one she hopes ends with a championship.

7. Rebekkah Brunson
, Minnesota Lynx (6-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
12.1 11.7 1.3 1.0 0.2 .570 0.000 .704 +19.44
Last ranking: 4
Rebekkah Brunson drops again in this week's Race to the MVP rankings but not without reason. I remain convinced that the Lynx are prepared to call on a variety of weapons throughout the course of the season. Brunson was the go-to player in early June with her six straight double-doubles. Now it's hard to pinpoint exactly who the team is starting to rely on more in addition to Brunson. Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore and Lindsay Whalen are just a few options, but the fact remains that Minnesota is defining the phrase "team play."

8. Sue Bird, Seattle Storm (5-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
14.6 2.5 5.3 1.8 0.1 .455 .325 .800 +14.50
Last ranking: 9
The Weekend Recap highlighted the play of the Seattle Storm and made mention of players stepping up while Lauren Jackson heals up. Bird remains a consistent force who has the distinct responsibility of creating the Storm's offense, one that currently ranks 12th in total points per game (70). Nevertheless, you wouldn't know it by looking at the standings, as Seattle also has the No. 1 ranked defense in the league (68.75 ppg). In other words, keep an eye on Sue's defense too.

9. Katie Douglas, Indiana Fever (7-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
17.3 5.0 2.6 1.4 0.3 .546 .500 .611 +18.67
Last ranking: 8
Although Tuesday's game against the Storm is Indiana's first game in seven days, one shouldn't overlook the fact that Katie Douglas is shooting the lights out again. After a bruised back sidelined her for most of the Phoenix game on June 19 and all of the Washington game two nights later, it took only one nine-point night against the Sun for her to cleanse the palate and get back in the 20-point range again. Let's see how she does against the league's best defense.

10. Sophia Young, San Antonio Silver Stars (7-2)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
16.1 6.3 2.8 1.4 0.5 .454 0.000 .674 +16.62
Last ranking: 14
Sophia Young has registered 12 points or more in every game this season and remains a consistent part of the San Antonio offense that currently ranks second overall in ppg with 90.22. She might be on the fringe of Top 10 voting now but as the season drags on consistency could be the one thing that gives her a boost up the list.

On the Outside Looking In (season averages)
11. Swin Cash (Seattle) 15.6 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 7.1 APG, 0.8 BPG, +16.62 EFF

Race to the MVP: Week 6

1. Sylvia Fowles, Chicago Sky (6-7)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
20.4 9.5 0.6 1.6 2.2 .571 0.000 .774 +23.85
Last ranking: 2
I had a chance to chat with Syl when she and the Sky came to town Sunday to take on the Liberty. I was quick to congratulate her on her dominating play so far this season, to which she replied, "You're talking to the wrong person." She looked like Syl. Sounded like Syl. I was forced to do a second take, crouching down to see her eye to eye and make sure I was actually talking to Syl (I was), before I realized she was crediting the play of Epiphanny Prince, Michelle Snow and Courtney Vandersloot for her own success. That's just the sort of person she is. Still, teammates can feed you the ball all day, but if you're not putting it in the hoop it gets you nowhere. So how's about you give yourself a little credit Syl?

2. Tina Charles, Connecticut Sun (6-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
18.4 10.6 1.0 0.7 1.4 .503 0.000 .750 +21.10
Last ranking: 1
Rest assured Tina wasn't demoted simply for the fact that she had one tough game against the Lynx. It's been a close one between Charles and Fowles for the past few weeks, and this time it's Syl's turn. Although her double-double streak of six straight games came to a halt, the bigger story here is exactly how Charles will respond Wednesday against Indiana and Friday against the Liberty. Tina's still fourth overall in scoring and second in rebounds per game. One bad night isn't going to ruin that, and I don't suspect we'll see many more of those this season.

3. Cappie Pondexter, New York Liberty (7-5)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
18.4 3.8 5.3 1.9 0.2 .430 .410 .889 +18.00
Last ranking: 4
So the Liberty start winning on Fourth of July weekend, huh? Liberty. America. I get it. And Cappie gets the slight bump this time around after helping the Libs spark a little three-game win streak after knocking off San Antonio in two straight and Chicago Sunday afternoon. She's now scored 18 points or more over her last eight games, with the 18 against the Sky standing as the lowest total of the eight outings. If that doesn't scream MVP I don't know what does.

4. Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury (8-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
19.2 3.3 3.4 0.9 0.8 .446 .357 .890 +16.83
Last ranking: 3
If the race between Charles and Fowles for No. 1 is the top story in this week's column then the race between Pondexter and Taurasi for the No. 3 spot is a close second. Everyone on Phoenix is scoring on a nightly basis. And by that I mean Kara Braxton (10.8 ppg), Candice Dupree (13.8 ppg) and Penny Taylor (16.3) make sure Taurasi doesn't have to do it alone with her team-high 19.2 ppg. But with everyone chipping in that allows Taurasi to open up her game. Check this: Over the first eight games Diana averaged 2.4 assists per game. Over the last four (all wins I might add) she's averaged 5.5. She'll hurt teams any way she can.

5. Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever (9-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
13.3 7.9 4.0 2.5 0.8 .418 .233 .921 +19.58
Last ranking: 6
First off, a hearty congrats to Tamika Catchings, who just this weekend surpassed Los Angeles' Ticha Penicheiro for the all-time record in career steals (738) thanks to a six-steal performance against the Mystics Saturday night. Of course, both are still active players, so we could see a nice back and forth over the remainder of the season. At any rate, Tamika and the Fever are on fire right now and they're riding a six-game win streak into Wednesday's matchup against the Sun on their home court at Conseco Fieldhouse. Tamika's contributions on both sides of the court play a significant part in Indy's recent string of success.

6. Becky Hammon, San Antonio Silver Stars (7-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
17.4 2.7 6.4 1.4 0.3 .452 .414 .837 +17.00
Last ranking: 5
Becky Hammon entered the fourth quarter of Friday's game against the Liberty with 11 points and ended the night with 18. As a career 90-percent free-throw shooter, it must've been disheartening for San Antonio fans to see three of Hammon's shots from the stripe miss the bottom of the net. Sometimes they fall, sometimes they don't. These are the breaks as San Antonio lost two straight to New York in the first week of July.

7. Sue Bird, Seattle Storm (6-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.5 2.6 5.5 1.5 0.2 .496 .408 .833 +16.50
Last ranking: 8
Since Lauren Jackson opted for surgery following Seattle's June 21 win over Tulsa, Sue Bird has averaged 14 points and 6.2 assists per game. It's not far off from her season averages. In fact, the past five games stand as evidence to the fact that Bird may consider passing up the shot if it means finding the better option. Then again, she's always played that way. It's just personified even more now that the Storm is relying on full team effort as opposed to posting up to Jackson. Bird's game hasn't suffered with the loss of LJ and she continues to be the force that controls and directs the attack for the Storm.

8. Rebekkah Brunson, Minnesota Lynx (7-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
12.1 11.5 1.3 0.9 0.2 .573 0.000 .704 +19.40
Last ranking: 7
Another week goes by and I'm torn on where to place Rebekkah Brunson in the Race to the MVP rankings. She's not scoring a lot, but that's because she doesn't have to. But here's the thing: she does it well when she needs to. Or, to be honest, when she wants to. Take a look at Saturday's Play of the Day and look at how easy she makes it look. That's four points in six seconds by the way, in case you weren't counting.

9. Katie Douglas, Indiana Fever (9-3)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
16.1 4.6 2.5 1.6 0.3 .536 .492 .636 +17.36
Last ranking: 9
Douglas' scoring may have tapered off a bit over the last two games but her accuracy is still dead on. After her 9-for-15, 25-point night against the Mercury three games ago, Douglas stepped out to a season-low nine points against the Storm. No worries though, as she bounced back and hit 6-of-10 Saturday night in Indy's come-from-behind win over the Mystics. That comes with the territory for a shooter like Douglas, but my hunch is we'll see more lights-out shooting more times than not this season.

10. Penny Taylor, Phoenix Mercury (8-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
16.3 5.0 5.4 1.5 0.4 .545 .421 .875 +21.08
Last ranking: N/A
Penny Taylor enters the Top 10 thanks to her lights-out shooting and all-around efficient play. Taylor currently ranks seventh overall in field-goal percentage (55 percent) and is knocking down 42 percent of her threes. What makes her game even more deadly is her increased awareness of teammates when the ball is in her hands. Much like Taurasi, Taylor doesn't have to drop every shot on this Phoenix team. So whether she's scoring 16 to 20 points a night, dropping five or six dimes or snagging a few boards, she'll do whatever it takes to keep the Mercury edging closer to the top of the Western Conference race.

Race to the MVP: Week 7

By WNBA.com Staff

1. Sylvia Fowles, Chicago Sky (7-8)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
20.4 9.9 0.5 1.6 2.6 .560 0.000 .779 +24.00
Last ranking: 1
Fowles’ stat line in the Sky’s 76-68 loss to the Dream on Saturday went like this: 21-11-8. Good, certainly, but not entirely amazing until you realize that that last number isn’t assists. It’s blocks. Asserting herself once again as the most dominant post player – and, if she keeps this pace, most dominant player at any position – Fowles commanded the lane on Saturday night, almost pulling off the extremely rare points-rebounds-blocks triple-double. Her team struggled, losing their fifth straight game on the road, but Syl was as solid as always. Toss in 21 points and 13 rebounds three days prior against Tulsa, and Fowles earned another week atop the rankings – and an Eastern Conference Player of the Week nod. If Chicago’s going to make its first-ever postseason, Fowles will be the driving force.

2. Tina Charles, Connecticut Sun (8-5)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
17.8 10.4 1.0 0.8 1.4 .503 0.000 .756 +20.69

In a crucial Eastern Conference showdown with the Liberty on Friday night, Charles led the way yet again, scoring a game-high 15 points to send the Sun to a win over the team breathing down their necks in the standings. She did, however, only have four rebounds – far below her season average of 10.6 per game – and scored only four points after the first 20 minutes of the game. Then, two days later, the Fever bore the brunt of her frustration, watching as Charles dropped in 18 points and tacked on 14 rebounds to give her a grand total of 25 rebounds and 33 points against Indiana in two games last week. In other words, Charles hasn't lost ground in the race because of anything she's done -- but right now, it's nearly impossible to keep pace with Fowles.

3. Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury (10-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
19.3 3.1 3.9 0.9 0.8 .439 .357 .902 +16.43

What a week it was for Taurasi. First, she gets named to her fifth All-Star Game. Then she becomes the fastest WNBA player in history to reach 5,000 points, doing so in her 243rd game (the Mercury’s win over the Mystics on Friday) to out-pace previous pacemaker Lauren Jackson, who did it in her 259th game. Meanwhile, her Mercury team wins its fifth and sixth games in a row and 10 of its last 11. And while she struggled from the floor against the Mystics, ending with 13 points and eight turnovers, she did chip in five assists to give her 13 for the week after dishing out eight against the Lynx on Wednesday. Oh yeah, she also scored 27 in the game. As Taurasi goes, so go the Mercury -- and right now, both are very, very dangerous.

4 Rebekkah Brunson, Minnesota Lynx (9-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
13.3 11.2 1.2 0.8 0.5 .584 .000 .692 +20.31

Last week, we were a little torn about where to place Brunson on this list because she wasn’t scoring a ton. Nevermind. The Lynx’ center rattled off a trio of dynamite games, averaging 17.33 points and 10 rebounds over Minnesota’s last three – including a 16-point, 16-rebound effort in a loss to the Mercury on July 13 – to earn Western Conference Player of the Week honors. Now, with the Lynx riding her play in and around the paint to a spot near the top of the Western Conference, we’ve got a better idea of where Brunson should fall in The Race.

5. Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever (10-5)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
14.2 8.0 3.8 2.3 0.7 .428 .282 .915 +20.20
Last ranking: 5
The Fever may have fallen to the Sun on Sunday night – their second loss in a row after a seven-game win streak – but not before a masterful effort by Catchings kept them in the game. Scoring 18 points (her ninth straight game in double-figures), hauling down 15 rebounds – competing in the lane with a certain Ms. Charles, mind you – and racking up three steals, Catchings showed just why she might be the most versatile player in the WNBA. This, after scoring 22 against the Lynx on Friday and dishing out seven assists in the Fever’s win over the Sun on Wednesday. Leading a team means adjusting your game, and at this point, few if any do it better than Catchings.

6. Cappie Pondexter, New York Liberty (9-6)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF

Over the final 17 minutes of the Liberty’s win over the Shock on Sunday, Pondexter didn’t come close to scoring. But forgive her: points are hard to come by from the bench. Despite sitting out the final one-and-a-half quarters of the Libs’ blowout win while coach John Whisenant played his reserves, the All-Star guard still led both teams in scoring, with 18 points on the night. However, she does drop a few spots this week due to two tough shooting nights in a row before that, as she went a combined 10-for-27 from the field in games against the Sun and Fever earlier in the week -- along with a Liberty team that's spreading the scoring load. But if there any murmurs that Cappie was slumping, she answered them with seven points in the first quarter against a Shock team helpless to stop her.

Bird cooled down a touch from the form that earned her a Western Conference Player of the Week nod last week, but she still managed to rattle off a 22-point and a 15-point game over the past seven days, in addition to a 10-pointer against the Silver Stars on July 14. But we’ll see just how valuable she is in the weeks to come, as Lauren Jackson continues to rehab after hip surgery.

8. Becky Hammon, San Antonio Silver Stars (9-4)

Hammon spent the first week of July and pretty much all of June igniting twine across the country. Then, all of a sudden, she froze over. Averaging 19.6 ppg over her previous seven games, she scored a total of 10 points in the Silver Stars’ pair last week – five in a loss to the Sparks, five in a win over the Storm. She’d failed to reach double-figures only once before this season, so a week that saw her go a combined 4-for-24 from the field comes as a shock – and, apparently, an aberration. She came back on Monday night and scored 26 in a win over the Sparks.

9. Penny Taylor, Phoenix Mercury (10-4)

Sure, Taylor only scored eight points in the Mercury’s win over the Mystics on Friday. But she also had eight rebounds. And seven assists. And five steals. A game prior, on July 13 against the Lynx, she went 19-8-8 – including 14 points in the fourth quarter, as Phoenix overcame an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter. And that’s been the way things have gone lately for the Phoenix sharpshooter, who’s plastered the stat sheet while she’s led her team’s march to the top of the Western chart heading into the All-Star break. She doesn’t have the flash – or quite the upside – of Taurasi, but whatever she has is exactly what the Mercury needs right now.

10. Candice Dupree, Phoenix Mercury (10-4)

If it feels wrong to have three players form the same team in the Race for the MVP Top 10, just think of what it feels like to play against them. Dupree joined Taylor with 19 points in the Mercury’s comeback win against the Lynx, then added 20 points against the Mystics to lead all scorers. On a night when points were hard to come by for both teams (Phoenix won, 78-64), Dupree shot 9-of-15 from the field and carried her team to a win. There’s a reason why Phoenix is the top-scoring team in the WNBA by more than 6.5 points over second-place San Antonio, and it’s because of this trio.

1. Sylvia Fowles, Chicago Sky (8-9)

Fowles scored six and pulled in six boards in 16 quality All-Star minutes, but stays at No. 1 because of two 20-point games before the break, where she scored a combined 45 points and shot 18-for-27 from the field in a loss to the Fever and a win against the Shock last week. She was, however, limited to one rebound against the Fever – an event that may not happen again until Fowles is playing a pickup game in 40 years or until the debt ceiling’s raised, whichever comes first.

2. Tina Charles, Connecticut Sun (9-5)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
18.3 10.1 0.9 0.7 1.4 .507 0.000 .766 +20.86

In her lone game before shipping off to San Antonio last week, Charles made it count – and took another step toward regaining her No. 1 position in the Race to the MVP. With 24 points and seven rebounds in a crucial win over the Liberty, she was the dominant force in a game that sent the Sun (briefly) into sole possession of first place in the East. But it was her fourth quarter – with eight points, as the Liberty nearly clawed all the way back from an 18-point deficit – that showed just why Tina may end this season with some hardware.

3. Rebekkah Brunson, Minnesota Lynx (10-4)

Must. Resist. Mentioning. All-Star Stuff. Alright, alright, so it doesn’t matter that All-Star starter Brunson (who filled in for the injured Candice Parker) scored 20 points and almost notched a double-double (she had nine boards) in 24 minutes – 24! we’ve had microwaved dinners that took longer – in the All-Star Game, but it is indicative of one thing: Rebekkah Brunson belongs in the elite. With two strong games (both wins) in the days leading up to the All-Star break, she has given the first-place Minnesota Lynx an all-around presence as strong as any in the WNBA.

4. Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury (10-5)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
19.6 3.1 4.0 0.9 0.7 .431 .352 .896 +16.67

Taurasi did score 24 points in the Mercury’s loss to the Lynx on July 20, but it came on 5-of-15 shooting. However, she did go 12-of-14 from the line, which shows you just what an intelligent (and important) scorer DT has become for Phoenix. Shots aren’t falling? No problem. Just drive the lane and get a couple free ones. As the Mercury look to make good on an inspired first half, Taurasi will be the centerpiece.

5. Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever (11-6)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
14.6 7.9 3.9 2.2 0.6 .428 .261 .915 +20.12
# Last ranking: 5
The Fever had sputtered a little bit heading into the break, losing three in a row before meeting with Chicago on July 22. To turn things around, they had to “attack,” in Catching’s words. And, playing off the pace set by their veteran, they did just that. Jessica Davenport led the way with 20 points, but Catching’s 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists obscured one more number: 1. One, as in, the number of turnovers Catchings had, in 30 minutes. That was the 13th time this season that she’s had two or fewer turnovers. She won’t always burn the nets down – she doesn’t have to – but when Catchings is on the floor, as always, her team’s in good hands.

6. Cappie Pondexter, New York Liberty (9-7)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
17.3 3.9 4.9 1.6 0.1 .429 .375 .881 +16.25
# Last ranking: 6
Pondexter is as she’s always been: a reliable scorer and a sparkplug with the ball in her hands. And after a slight lull in scoring (21 points between two games on July 13-15), she’s regained her touch, with 34 over her last two. Meanwhile, she’s still getting her teammates involved (6 assists against the Sun, to go with 16 points), attacking the boards and giving the Liberty a chance to run with – and possibly be – the best of the East.

7. Becky Hammon, San Antonio Silver Stars (9-5)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.8 2.6 6.2 1.3 0.4 .422 0.395 .860 +15.21
# Last ranking: 8
On the same day that her counterpoint Sue Bird struggled, Hammon wavered a bit, too – although to a lesser degree. Hammon scored 11 points, but the WNBA’s leader in assists chipped in only two dimes, while turning the ball over five times. She did, however, hit 3-of-6 3-pointers, showing just how dangerous she can be from everywhere on the court.

8. Penny Taylor, Phoenix Mercury (10-5)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
16.3 5.3 5.7 1.6 0.5 .549 .451 .857 +22.07

If Taylor keeps playing like this, expect her to be a fixture on this list. After spreading her efforts around in a July 15 win over the Mystics (8 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals), she got back to doing what she’s best at in the Mercury’s loss to the Lynx on July 20: namely, scoring. Shooting a scorching 8-for-10 from the floor (and 3-for-5 from behind the arc), Taylor dropped in 23 points, to go along with five assists and four rebounds.

9. Seimone Augustus, Minnesota Lynx (10-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.9 4.1 2.0 1.1 0.4 .487 .429 .857 +14.86

The Minnesota Lynx have the best winning percentage (.714) in the WNBA. And so much of that is thanks to the work of Seimone Augustus. The reigning Conference Player of the Week dropped in 25 points and pulled down six rebounds in the Lynx’ win over the Mercury last week, proving to be the standout player in a shootout full of stars. Finally healthy after a series of injuries, expect Augustus to make a charge up this list as the Lynx defend their spot atop theirs.

10. Sue Bird, Seattle Storm (8-7)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.3 2.8 5.2 1.5 0.1 .461 .413 .808 +15.60

A Bird in the paint is worth two on the perimeter? Something like that. In the same week that saw her named one of the WNBA’s All-Time Top 15 Players, Bird came out and took four shots against San Antonio on July 22. She made one of them. Finishing the game with four points, Bird did add seven assists, but credit for pulling the Storm out of a rare three-game losing streak belonged to her teammates. What’s so perplexing about that game is that Bird had scored 26 points just three days prior in a loss to Chicago. Who knows: Maybe Bird saw that racking up buckets wasn’t the key to her team’s success and just deferred to other scorers, but Seattle will be looking for a more balanced player from here on out.

1. Tina Charles, Connecticut Sun (11-6)

Three games, three double-doubles. If you're looking for consistency, look no further than Tina -- "The Glass Cleana," as she's known around these parts -- Charles. That gave her six double-doubles over the course of July and 11 on the season. She's also scored in double-figures in 14 of her last 15 games and eight times in a row. Welcome back to the top spot, "Sun Block."

2. Sylvia Fowles, Chicago Sky (9-11)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
19.8 9.4 0.6 1.4 2.4 .563 0.000 .775 +23.05
# Last ranking: 1
When Fowles took over the No. 1 spot from Charles a few weeks ago, we wrote that it wasn't a reflection of Charles' play as much as it was of Fowles'. Same goes this time. Although Fowles had two uncharacteristically poor (read: under 50 percent) shooting nights over the past three games -- before she went 5-for-11 against Connecticut, she'd shot 50 percent or better in 11 of 12 games -- she still averaged 14.67 points per game and 10.33 rebounds a game over the past week.

3. Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury (11-7)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
20.2 3.0 3.9 1.0 0.7 .444 .361 .908 +17.44

It's just really very hard to stop Taurasi these days. Although her team suffered two losses last week -- to the Storm on July 26 and to the Silver Stars two days later -- she scored 26 and 27 points in those games, respectively. Then, despite struggling from the field during most of the game, she hit a layup and fired in a dagger from 3-point range over the final 40 seconds to send the Phoenix to a win over the Sun on July 30.

4. Becky Hammon, San Antonio Silver Stars (11-6)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
17.1 2.8 6.0 1.4 0.3 .445 0.451 .881 +16.59

When Hammon’s on, good luck getting in the way. The Western Conference Player of the Week is coming off a 7-day stretch that saw her completely take over. She scored 22 points and added five rebounds and three steals against the Mystics, then scored 33 points – a season-high for San Antonio – in a big win over the Mercury a game later. Oh yeah, she also had time for seven assists, four rebounds and two steals in that one. And her 15 points and six assists would have been enough to send the Silver Stars to a win over conference-leading Minnesota, had Whalen not sunk that buzzerbeater to keep San Antonio in second.

5. Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever (14-6)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
14.2 8.0 3.9 2.0 0.8 .419 .321 .899 +19.60
# Last ranking: 5
Another week, and just more evidence that Catchings could be the most well-rounded player in the league. She scored 16 points and pulled down six and nine rebounds, respectively, in wins over Connecticut and Washington, and then added 11 more boards despite scoring only four points in a win over the Sparks on July 31.

6. Seimone Augustus, Minnesota Lynx (13-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF

What a July it was for Augustus, the new Western Conference Player of the Month. In arguably the best shape of her career, her play's reflecting it, with another great stretch of games last week. After scoring 22 against the Sparks, she went out and scored 16 and 16 against the Storm and Silver Stars, respectively. And not only did she contribute buckets, she tossed in five boards against Seattle and four assists against San Antonio to help her team to crucial wins.

7. Angel McCoughtry, Atlanta Dream (8-10)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF

# Last ranking: 12
After two straight Player of the Week Awards and a Player of the Month nod on Tuesday, it's safe to say that as McCoughtry goes, so follow the Dream. As she struggled through injuries earlier in the season, Atlanta's record reflected it. She averaged 15.1 points a game in June (although it came on 38 percent shooting), and the Dream got off to a 3-6 start. In July, she's upped that pace to 23.2 per game, and the Dream have gone 5-3, including 5-1 over their last six to jump back into the Eastern playoff race. Oh yeah, she averaged 31.67 points per game last week.

8. Rebekkah Brunson, Minnesota Lynx (13-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF

Brunson, who'd risen into the Top 3 in The Race last week, takes a tumble this time around after icing up last week. After seven straight double-digit-scoring nights in a row before the Sparks game on July 26, she didn't have a single one last week, combining for only 20 points over three games -- the number she'd the Lynx' win over the Fever on July 15 alone. She did pull down 13 rebounds in the win over the Silver Stars, but as Brunson's teammates took bigger roles, she faded into the background a bit.

9. Penny Taylor, Phoenix Mercury (11-7)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
15.9 4.9 5.2 1.5 0.4 .520 .431 .867 +20.37

Taylor labored a little in both of Phoenix's losses last week, but when her team needed her most – against the Liberty, after three straight losses – she shone. With 29 points, she kept the Mercury in the game before Taurasi wrapped things up at the end.

10. Lindsay Whalen, Minnesota Lynx (13-4)

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT% EFF
14.1 3.2 5.8 1.3 0.1 .522 .455 .725 +16.33
# Last ranking: 13
After a sluggish stretch, Whalen charges back into the Top 10 thanks to a week that saw her average 16.0 points per game and a league-best 5.7 assist per game over her last three games -- all Lynx wins -- including last-second baseline jumper to stun the Silver Stars and send Minnesota to a 70-69 win on Sunday. In a duel with one of the best point guards in WNBA history (SA's Becky Hammon), Whalen stood tallest.
