Mercury guard Diana Taurasi won the 2010 WNBA Peak Performer Award for scoring, the WNBA announced today. The league presents three Peak Performer awards annually to the players who lead the league in scoring, rebounding and assists during the regular season.
Taurasi earns her third consecutive scoring title and the fourth in the last five years after averaging 22.6 points per game, the third highest average of her career. She also won the scoring title in 2009 (20.4 ppg), 2008 (24.1 ppg) and 2006 (25.3 ppg).
The reigning WNBA MVP recorded eight 30-point performances this season extending her WNBA-leading career total to 31 and tallied two back-to-back 30-point efforts giving her five such occurrences in her career. On July 14 she poured in a season-high and US Airways Center record 44 points vs. Seattle, becoming the only player in WNBA history with three 40-point performances.
Ranking fourth all-time in three pointers made (582), Taurasi drained a league-leading 80 three pointers this season on 37.4% shooting. She is second on the WNBA all-time scoring list averaging 20.7 points per game in her career and sixth in total points scored (4,731).
Led by the All-Star’s torrid pace, the Mercury led the league in scoring for the fifth consecutive season with 93.9 points per game, setting a new WNBA record for the fourth time. The league’s most potent offense set a WNBA single game scoring record three different times this season including back-to-back outings at Tulsa on July 22 (123 points) and at Minnesota on July 24 (127). The club topped the century mark 10 times this season setting yet another league scoring record.
